This was obviously one of the Númenoreans' most beautiful buildings in Middle-earth (though built by a Steward rather than one of the line of kings.)

In the following quote from UT we find an interesting detail - a connection between the stone used for MinasTirith and Orthanc:

History would indeed make it clear that neither Orthanc nor the WhiteTower in MinasTirith had ever been captured or sacked by enemies
