Thorin II

Thorin II, Dwarf, He wore a Blue hood with a silver tassel and played a Golden harp.

King of DurinsFolk in exile, reclaimed Erebor (with Gandalf's and Bilbo's help) from Smaug.

Died in the Battle of the Five Armies and was buried with his sword, Orcrist, and the Arkenstone.

At the {Battle of Nanduhiron}?, he lost his shield, and hewed a branch off an oak tree to use as a left-hand club. He won renown and an augmented name - Thorin Oakenshield - for this deed (and for surviving that battle).

Note that in medieval warfare, if you flee a battle you typically drop your heavy shield to run faster. But if you stay and get whupped they carry you home on your shield. Hence the expression "Come home with your shield, or on it."

Thorin won renoun despite legitimately losing his shield, by valiantly avoiding the need to abstain from the battle, and by surviving against an overwhelming number of foes while using incomplete gear.

Thorin II represented at once three of Tolkien's themes; a prince on errantry to learn battle and leadership, an exiled king returning to a realm and reclaiming it, and a king dying in the battle that saves a kingdom and establishes a new dynasty. [PhlIp]
