Elendil

Elf-friend or Star-lover

Elendil the Tall, son of Amandil, last lord of Andúnië. Elendil also went under the name Elendil Vorona, meaning Elendil the faithful.

Elendil descended from Eärendil and Elwing, but not of the direct line of the Kings of Númenor.

Father of Isildur and Anárion.

Elendil escaped with his sons from the destruction of Númenor, and came to Middle-earth where they founded the Númenórean realms of Arnor and Gondor. It is said that Elendil afterwards wrote the Akallabêth, and also the tale of Aldarion and Erendis.

When Elendil came to Middle-earth, he brought with him the Palantíri. These were an inalienable gift to Elendil and his heirs, to whom alone they belonged by right. Gil-galad built for him the 3 Towers of EmynBeraid and put a Palantír to the middle (and heighest) one

Together with Gil-galad, Elendil formed the Last Alliance to counter Sauron in the Second Age.

Elendil was slain by Sauron on the slopes of Orodruin, together with Gil-galad. Isildur brought his body to Halfirien, and placed it in a tomb there, and announced that palce to be hallowed ground, denoting the middle of the kingdom of Gondor. This was the place where Cirion and Eorl swore the oath of allegiance between Gondor and Rohan, after which Cirion removed the casket with the remains of Elendil to the Hallows of Minas Tirith.

How tall was Elendil? The only information I have found on this is in Unfinished Tales, concerning the length of the well-known unit ranga. It is there stated that Elendil was

more than man-high by nearly half a ranga.
Unfinished Tales, The Disaster at Gledden Fields, Appendix: Númenórean Linear Measures.

A ranga is said to be the length of the stride, from rear-heel to front-toe, of a full-grown man marching swiftly, but at ease. It is also said that one ranga was thirty-eight inches. And man-high was normally two rangar, at least in the later days when the stature of the Dúnedain had decreased somewhat. With Elendil being about 2,5 rangar, this would lead to the concution that he was at least 241 centemetres tall.

Et Edrello Endorenna utúlien. Sinome maruvan ar Hildinyar tenn' Ambar-metta.

(Out of the Great Sea to Middle-earth I am come. In this place will I abide, and my heirs, unto the ending of the world.)

The words Elendil spoke when he came up out of the Sea on the wings of the wind.
