Durin

Durin I awoke among the Seven Fathers of the Dwarves, during the FirstAge, in the caves that were to become Khazad-dûm (Moria). He became their first king, and in later generations the royalty of Khazad-dûm would produce a sequence of heirs each so like to Durin that they would name him "Durin" and make him their king.

See also : Durin I, Durin III, Durin VI, Durin VII.

This super-dynasty of lineages, each founded by a patriarch named "Durin", represented a kind of "Dalai Lama" to the Dwarves; a leader who maintains rule not by primogeniture, but by re-incarnation. [PhlIp]
